This month, the third Big Lie that Motivational Speakers Tell Us in our continuing series, along with a powerful marketing tip from our good friend Danny Bobrow of American Dental Marketing.

Motivational Lie #3: A frog placed in boiling water will jump out of it. But a frog placed in water heated slowly enough will not notice the heat and will die.

I suppose the point of this cruel story is that we tend not to notice gradual change. But this lie is insulting both to frogs and to people.

Professor Doug Melton, a Harvard University biologist, says, "If you put a frog in boiling water, it won't jump out. It will die. If you put it in cold water, it will jump before it gets hot -- they don't sit still for you."

The claim that the frog is oblivious to gradual change does not withstand scientific scrutiny, which gives me hope for humans in similar situations.

A Simple Way to Know Where Your Marketing is Working
