If I fly 100,000 miles a year, then I want my airline to treat me like a king. I certainly would not expect the airline to treat me the same way they treat all their other passengers

If you’re running a practice, you’re running a business. And in a business, it is fair to treat people differently based upon performance. In fact, it would be unfair to do anything else. High performance earns privileges that low performance does not.

If a low performer can paralyze you with the accusation that you are “playing favorites,” your practice will suffer. If you are unwilling to create a custom deal for a top performer, your practice will suffer. The most unfair thing you can do is to treat all of your people the same way. You’re running a business, after all, not a commune.

Do you know what moves your people? Are you treating them as unique individuals? Are you looking for that one thing that you can do for them that no other employer will?

When low performers get the same treatment as high performers, you inadvertently reinforce and reward low performance, and you will see more of it. As the saying goes, you don’t get what you expect; you get what you accept.
